A composition of a cabbage leaf, flowers, a mossy twig, and a butterfly.
It starts with arranging and rearranging the cabbage leaf, the flowers, and the twig until I'm satisfied with the composition. Then I take several photos to finally choose one to paint.
First, I create an underpainting in raw umber and titanium white. Then I build up the painting in layers of mostly transparent paint. To complete the composition, I add a butterfly in the same color as the pansy. Finally, I apply the highlights with opaque paint.
This painting is made using the fine painting technique.
